Description of some things that everyone can encounter.

You may not discover America for yourself in this material, but many people face these problems and don’t know why.

It is impossible to fully understand the processes that occur in the human brain. But there are paradoxes and effects that have been recorded by psychologists during research and scientific experiments.

The effect of complete failure

For example, Elliot Aronson found that the person who made the most mistakes on a quiz received more likes from viewers. Aronson called this reaction the effect of complete failure. Of course, you can say that this is not true and no one likes stupid people, but remember such a phenomenon as beggars or the success of videos with people making mistakes; at worst, many people consider burr cute.

Pygmalion effect

Remember the saying: “If you call a person a pig, sooner or later he will grunt”?

It turns out that it has a psychological basis. Psychologist Robert Rosenthal conducted an experiment. At the beginning of the school year, he showed the “results” of an IQ test to the teachers of one of his classes.

He set high indicators randomly and they did not correspond to reality.

What do you think were the results of these students at the end of the school year? The supposedly high IQ scores were higher than those of other children. If you think that teachers pitied them and inflated their grades, then you are mistaken. The teachers, on the contrary, demanded more knowledge from them because they believed in their potential.

Of course, the effect cannot work in 100% of cases, so you should not call your child an elemental master and expect him to control the weather. But believing that a child can do more than he thinks is better than expecting only mistakes and mistakes from him.

And yes, do not confuse this effect with the speeches of life coaches who sing mantras about thoughts materializing.

The paradox of choice

Have you ever found yourself wondering if you made the right choice when purchasing a cell phone? There are so many models on the market, so many companies, so many configurations. It is sometimes difficult to choose, and after the purchase there is sometimes an unpleasant aftertaste. So, psychologists have found that the greater the choice, the greater the likelihood that a person may remain dissatisfied with his choice.

Bystander effect

Those who have moved from the outback to the big city will understand it most clearly. How often do you notice that in a big city people rush to help someone in need? Psychologists Bibb Lathan and John Darley conducted a study that provides an empirical answer to the above question.

When study participants thought they were the only ones who saw a person in trouble, 85% came to help. If the experiment participants were alone, then 65% came to help. In a company of four study participants, 31% came to help.

These results are explained by the fact that when there are many bystanders, they believe that someone else will provide help without taking the initiative. When you are the only one who can help, you need to make a firm decision.

Spotlight effect

Do you often think that all your mistakes and mistakes are in plain sight? Paranoia and self-doubt develop due to the spotlight effect. The brain mistakenly thinks that our mistakes are always visible to society.

Psychologists conducted an experiment to prove this brain misconception. For clarity, the subject was asked to wear a strange T-shirt all day, and at the end they interviewed their interlocutors.

They asked the question, what's wrong with this man's T-shirt? Only 50% of respondents said they noticed something wrong with the T-shirt.

I would like to believe that knowing these paradoxes and the effects of your brain will help make your life more peaceful.
