Most people are afraid of death, and rightly so. This is an evolutionary feature. But often, when we come to cemeteries, we think about the eternal. Why? But because the place is conducive. Besides, sometimes it's beautiful. We have collected the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

Paris, Père Lachaise

This is the most famous cemetery in the world and the largest in Paris. Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Amedeo Modigliani, Edith Piaf, Frederic Chopin, Balzac, Moliere and 70 thousand more people found their peace here.

Three million people from all over the world visit the cemetery every year.

Prague, Old Jewish Cemetery

This is one of the oldest burial places in Europe; the first surviving slab dates back to 1439. And in total there are 12 thousand tombstones. It’s hard to imagine how many people found their final refuge here.

London, Highgate Cemetery

This is a Victorian style cemetery. It is young, founded in 1839. It is also part of the "Magic Seven" project - that is, relatively modern cemeteries around London.

Karl Marx (his grave was repeatedly desecrated), George Eliot and Lucy Western (who allegedly died from the bite of Dracula in Bram Stoker's novel) are buried here.

Photography for commercial use and filming are prohibited here.

Buenos Aires, La Recoleta Cemetery

In some countries, graves are built not in the ground, but above it. Therefore, such cemeteries become more like not even graves, but like a small city.

The cemetery area dates back to 1732, but it only became a public place in 1822, when the religious order Nuestra Señora del Pilar was dissolved. Then, when yellow fever broke out in the city, many rich people moved to live just nearby, to the north of the city. Since then, powerful and rich people have been buried here.

Also buried here is Maria Eva Duarte de Peron, better known as Eva, the First Lady of Argentina. She was from a poor family, and at the age of 12 she accidentally received burns from boiling oil on her hands and face. The doctor who was brought to her said that the girl would be scarred for life. But when the bandages were removed a month later, underneath they revealed perfect snow-white skin, without a single scar.

After the death of her first husband, due to the fact that the marriage was his second, she was left with nothing. As a result, she was forced to go to work as an actress and model, where she gained fame and success. Then she met Juan Peron and married him. It’s probably worth writing about these two separately.

This woman died in 1952, and in 1955, during a military coup, her body was stolen and could not be found for 14 years. At this time it rested in Milan under a different name, but then they managed to return the remains back to the famous cemetery.

Sydney, Waverley Cemetery

This cemetery is especially noteworthy for its appearance.

Yes, yes, there are some with sea views. Sometimes they even see whales here.

Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, USA

This cemetery is notable because its creator, Hubert Eaton, intended it to radiate optimism and belief in the justice of the afterlife.

There are many sculptures here as well as an art museum. By the way, Walt Disney and Michael Jackson are buried here.

Cementerio General de Santiago, Santiago, Chile

The cemetery was founded in 1821, and today it is the largest in Latin America. Almost 2 million people are buried here, including almost all the presidents of Chile.

At the same time, the cemetery serves as a city park. The cemetery website (yes, there is such a thing) says that here you can see how the necropolis developed over time. In addition, even the metro station here is called “Cemeteries” (due to the fact that there is another small one nearby), and it spreads over 85 hectares.

Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, USA

This is one of the oldest and most beautiful cemeteries in the South American states.

Interesting fact: the famous naturalist John Muir stayed here (literally pitched a tent right on the graves) in 1867, when the cemetery did not yet have its modern name and fame.

Okunoin, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan

This is the largest cemetery in Japan. About 200 thousand Buddhist monks are buried here, as well as the famous cultural and political figure Kukai.

The cemetery was founded in 816. Now, in addition to tombstones, there are also art objects there. For example, a monument to a cup of coffee, erected in honor of the employees of a coffee company.

Cimitirul Vesel, Romania

The name literally translates as “Merry Cemetery”. It is located in the north of the country.

On each tombstone there are carved oak crosses of sky blue color. Below the crosses are depicted scenes from the life of the deceased and even poems (the content is not at all sad - about adventures, drinking bouts and even jokes about the mother-in-law).

Of course, these are not all the beautiful cemeteries in the world. But we'll tell you about others next time.
