Game for the sake of a spectacular shot: what lengths are the actors willing to go to make the audience believe them? (11 photos)
Cinema, taking into account the latest achievements, is becoming brighter and more technologically advanced, but, unfortunately, it is losing some of its artistry and emotional component in favor of effects.
But the fighters of the old school did things to recreate emotions on the screen that people with weak psyches should not do without prior preparation.
I feel sorry for the bird
For Michelle Pfeiffer, the role of Catwoman in 1992's Batman was iconic. There is an episode in the film when she catches a bird, puts it in her mouth, but changes her mind about eating and lets the bird go.
The bird was real, not rubber or added with graphics. The film crew was in awe and delighted after Pfeiffer's act. And the actress herself later recalled her impulse with horror, noting that she would never do it again and never for anything. Thank God, the scene was filmed in the first take: it is unlikely that the feathered little thing would want to get into a human mouth again, even such a beautiful one.
When it's stormy and feverish
20-year-old beauty Halle Berry was rejected from auditioning for a role in the 1991 film “Jungle Fever”: the girl was too beautiful and charming in her healthy youth, because the main character was a degenerate drug addict with all that that implies.
But Berry can’t be fooled by chaff: she swore to the director that she would ensure an accurate fit into the character. And she ensured: she stopped washing. What shocked his on-screen partner: Samuel L. Jackson recalled with horror how Berry reeked of sweat. But refusing to wash gave the actress a chance and a role, which became the starting point of her career.
Dentist in reverse
Normal people visit the dentist to have defects corrected. And master Robert De Niro went to the dentist with the opposite goal: to worsen his teeth in order to look authentic and realistic in the image of a maniac in the film “Cape Fear.” Any whim, as they say, is for your money. And although it cost the actor 20 thousand dollars to return everything to normal, the well-deserved Oscar compensated for his moral and physical torment.
On the verge of death
It's not just stupid teenage girls who drive themselves to exhaustion due to dissatisfaction with their supposedly fat figure. Christian Bale will give any nymphet a run for his money. A tall, strong man over 180 cm tall lost weight for the role in the film “The Machinist” from 84 to a critical 55 kg!
Shortly after The Machinist, Bale took part in the filming of Rescue Dawn (2006). He had to restore the mass in a short time to create a convincing image of a military man who had been in captivity. The creepiest part of the film was the maggot-eating episode, the purpose of which was to demonstrate the highest degree of despair.
Candy man
Tony Todd agreed to have insects crawl on him for 1992's Candyman. And the insects are very biting - bees. He played the role of an evil spirit who turned from a ghost into a real-life urban legend. Since computer graphics were in their infancy at the time, Tony was bitten by striped buzzers about 20 times. But he didn’t complain or grumble. Only more than a quarter of a century after the film’s release, Todd admitted that self-interest helped him endure the execution: he was paid $1,000 for each bite.
More than alive
In 2015's The Revenant, the graphics, of course, were already up to par. But DiCaprio, who played the main role, categorically advocated realism, supporting the director’s plan. The fact that Leo lost weight and grew a beard is trivial. In order to get used to the character, he spent hours in the cold and climbed into the carcass of the animal. The episode where the character eats raw liver was also not a prop. DiCaprio explained that he refused the funny piece of plasticine because his scene partner, an Indian, ate the real thing. And he was uncomfortable playing under such conditions.
The natural physiological reaction of a person unaccustomed to such a diet was included in the film. By the way, its filming lasted a total of 9 months, although the filming process itself required three times less time. This had to be done due to the remoteness of the shooting locations, weather conditions and the need to use only natural light.
Would you dare to do something like this for a role?
