Continuations of films in which facts and events from previous parts were changed (11 photos)
Sequels are often inferior to the original first part. Sometimes screenwriters deliberately distort facts and events from previous parts.
Today we will turn to examples of the use of such a literary device as retroactive continuity in cinema. Sounds dashing, doesn't it? The mechanism of its work is as follows: continuations of works (in our case, films) are suddenly taken and ignored, violated, supplemented, or generally modified in every possible way the rules, facts and plot twists from the previous parts.
That is, in the first part one thing was said, but in the sequel we are convinced that everything was wrong. For example, in the original a character dies, but in the second part it is said that he did not die at all, but simply lay down. Yes, they do this, and you have probably encountered this.
Obviously, when this happens to important plot threads and characters, the audience most often does not even like it. But still, this is not always a bad move! Let's look at those famous cases from big cinema when this very retcon had a negative impact on the stories being shown and when it was quite appropriate. It's up to you to decide.
So what has suddenly been revealed about the sequels of famous films, and how has this new information affected our perception of these famous stories as a whole?
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
What turned out to be: Albus Dumbledore has another brother.
By the way, do you know how this fact was dealt with in the new film of the series - “Fantastic Beasts: The Dumbledore Secrets”? While we won’t spoil it, watch the movie (or better yet, don’t).
Star Wars. Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
What turned out to be: Strength is not a mystical-spiritual ability, but the presence of certain midi-chlorians in the heroes’ bodies. The more of them, the greater the character’s Strength.
Spider-Man 3: Enemy in Reflection (2007)
What turned out to be: Uncle Ben was killed not by the robber from the first film, but by the Sandman, aka Flint Marko, who also did it by accident.
007: Specter (2015)
What's Revealed: Ernst Stavro Blofeld is James Bond's half-brother. Additionally, all of the events in Daniel Craig's Bond films were orchestrated by Blofeld.
This is the risky case when new information does not have the best effect on the previous films in the franchise, turning them into something less significant than it seemed.
Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
What turned out to be: at the end of the last part, “Halloween: 20 Years Later” (1997), the main character Laurie killed not Michael Myers, but an innocent policeman dressed in his clothes and mask. And Myers himself is still alive. Nightmare!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Stories (2016)
What turned out to be: the architect of the Death Star, Galen Erso, turns into a hero, since he deliberately made it vulnerable and passed information about its flaw to the rebels.
But this is the same example of an interesting and appropriate addition to the facts from the previous parts.
Terminator: Genisys (2015)
What turned out to be: John Connor turned out to be... the T-3000 Terminator.
Well, this is all right, in the last film of the series “Terminator: Dark Fate” (2019) John is killed almost in the first scene.
Creed: Rocky's Legacy (2015)
What turned out to be: Apollo Creed, the hero of the first four Rocky films, shown as a decent family man, has an illegitimate son, conceived shortly before Apollo's death in a fight against Ivan Drago.
This move paved the way for a very successful spin-off of the series, so there is nothing to complain about.
Alien 3 (1992)
What turned out to be: Newt and Hicks, who survived with Ripley at the end of the previous part, die (and the android Bishop is completely out of order), as a facehugger is suddenly discovered in their ship “Sulaco”, which interrupts their flight to Earth. Possibly the most ruthless and dark premise of a sequel film in the history of cinema.
The Matrix: Resurrection (2021)
What turned out to be: Trinity is also the chosen one. However, everything is complicated there (as always happens in The Matrix).
