"Be healthy!" This is a common and familiar wish for someone who has sneezed. Who will either thank you, apologize, or do both.

But not all countries react to “apchhi” in the same way as we do.

Health and only health

Actually, the wish for health appeared for a reason. After all, sneezing is one of the most obvious signs of an impending or already manifested illness.

Therefore, basically everyone will have a wish for health. But in different contexts. Terveydeksi: a Finn will say so, ceremoniously, even somewhat archaically. The word is used as a thank you for a treat, as a toast, and as a wish for health after a sneeze.

Salud! This is what the Spaniards say when they wish for health. But the residents of this country also use Jesus. God is mentioned for a reason, but as a protector from evil. The Spaniards believe that an evil spirit can enter a person through an open mouth while sneezing, and such preventive measures must be taken.

God is also mentioned by the English and Scandinavians (bless you and prosit).

Crazy traditions

But there are also some completely crazy and derogatory reactions to sneezing. Indignation, anger, disappointment - these are the emotions that East Africans demonstrate.

They are sure that in this way you are disturbing higher powers, which should not be disturbed unnecessarily. And they ask the gods for forgiveness for you, so stupid and ill-mannered, saying yimarish or yimarih.

And love, and dreams, and jokes below the belt

Residents of the Netherlands traditionally wish them health on their first birthday. And on the second they will note that this is for good weather. Whether this sign works or not, it exists.

The loving French will wish for the fulfillment of their wishes on the first sneeze, and, accordingly, love on the second. After all, it saves you from all ailments. And after the third they will start making rather obscene jokes.

Residents of some Latin American countries will also wish for love, while others – money. Apparently, who has what is more relevant.

The Turks will say “chok yasha”, and the person who sneezed will answer “hip beraber”. What in translation means a wish for long life and a similar wish in response.

How do you behave in the event of an unexpected sneeze – yours and those around you?
