How weddings that cost tens of millions of dollars take place and are prepared.

The average price of a wedding in the USA is $29 thousand, which at today’s exchange rate is 1.7 million rubles (source). That's roughly how much it costs just to print and design wedding invitations for tens of millions of dollars. A Bloomberg journalist spent a week working for party king Colin Cowie and revealed how his clients spend $25 million over three wedding days.

Cowie organizes weddings for Arab sheikhs, Qatari princesses, and Hollywood celebrities. He himself is not personally involved in the organization if the wedding costs less than $1 million. It takes him and his people an average of 9 months to prepare one wedding, but once he did everything in 6 days. The most expensive wedding he organized in recent years cost $25 million. This amount includes the services of the world's best chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants, popular DJs and singers, lighting and sound equipment of the level of the best Broadway shows, dishes (at one Arab wedding, VIP guests ate from plates, each costing $12,000), a venue built from the ground up. Several million dollars are spent on fresh flowers alone to decorate the hall. There are even gifts for residents of neighboring houses so that they don’t get too angry about the noise after 23:00.

Clients pay not only for first-class service, but also for the confidence that everything will happen exactly as they planned. That is, even the weather does not matter to such a wedding. Just in case, a spare venue is filmed and decorated. For example, one eight-figure wedding booked a plan B venue for half a million dollars that ended up not being needed.

One day, a very expensive wedding was canceled because the guests didn't show up. At the bride's insistence, the text on the invitations was written in rare ink made of real gold. During shipping, the ink was erased, so the guests received empty invitations. Since then, the Cowie agency has always done test sending of invitations. That's why wedding planners secretly love it when things go wrong at a party. This will allow him to prepare for that “wrong” next time that he never thought possible.

The wedding price also includes bribes and generous tips for a variety of employees. For example, once on the island of Anguilla (a British overseas territory in the Caribbean), 5 thousand orchids, brought there on a private plane for a wedding, disappeared, and then mysteriously they ended up in the shop of the customs chief’s sister. I had to buy them back from there. Or somehow one of the producers of the ceremony was kidnapped, and a ransom had to be paid for it (apparently, someone took the tradition of ransom at a wedding too seriously).

Colin Cowie.

The Cowie people say that the most dangerous person at a super rich wedding is the mother of the bride. She once had an ordinary wedding, but now she is rich and wants to win back with the help of her daughter. Fathers also have quirks. An employee of the Cowie agency told how the bride once warned her that her dad would act weird, and apologized in advance. Arriving at the wedding, the first thing my father did was demand that all the rabbis blessing the food and checking it for kosher be replaced. At the last moment, at his request, new rabbis were sent from Miami, one of whom was later caught stealing - he took with him kosher steaks and $5 thousand worth of wine.

A big problem can be for wealthy couples signing prenuptial agreements. Brides sometimes use a luxurious wedding for blackmail. One of the weddings worth tens of millions of dollars ended with the bride demanding an additional $10 million from the groom the day before to sign the marriage contract, otherwise she threatened to abandon the wedding. The superjets were already filled with foie gras and red caviar, a gift for the bride had already been bought - a $1 million necklace, but the groom did not follow the bride’s lead and canceled the wedding.

Cowie has some advice for weddings of any cost:

Place tables together so that no one sits apart.

Place 10 guests at a table that seats 8 people.

No buffets. Guests should not overeat at a wedding.

The ideal serving of food is three courses in an hour and a half.

Don't overuse toasts and speeches. 2-3 speeches no more than 3 minutes long, and then have fun.

Mandatory ceremonies, such as the father-bride dance, should last no more than 45 seconds.

Serving the cake at the very end of the evening, leaving the wedding before the cake is bad manners.

Employees at Cowie's agency say that organizing weddings for the rich is a very nerve-wracking experience. Careercast ranked holiday planner as the 6th most stressful job. One wedding agency employee interviewed by a Bloomberg journalist says that after hosting many lavish weddings, she firmly decided that she herself would limit herself to the passport stamping ceremony.
