The climate on the planet is changing not for the better. Scientists warn that we could lose our favorite foods by 2050 due to global warming.

There are more than 7,000 varieties of edible plants on Earth, but humanity primarily eats only 15 of them. One major crop failure among these fifteen, and there will be famine. Potatoes once saved Europe from famine when there was a wheat harvest. Perhaps it’s also time for us to look for an alternative to the usual vegetables, fruits, and grains in case the middle zone experiences a tropical climate due to global warming. Here are some possible replacement candidates if the world gets hotter and drier.

Marama beans

Marama beans are grown in southern Africa, and for some time now in the USA and Australia. They grow successfully in the poorest soil and they don’t mind drought either. Rich in beneficial microelements and fatty acids, beans can be boiled, fried, or made into flour. Roasted marama beans taste similar to cashews. These beans have been known to mankind since ancient times.

Enseta swollen

Enseta swollen is also called “false banana”. Enseta is the main plant of Ethiopia, where it already saves people from starvation. The false banana is a relative of the regular banana, but its fruit is inedible. But the stems and roots can be eaten. They are rich in starch and are used to make porridges and flatbreads.

False bananas are resistant to drought, do not get sick, and can be planted at any time of the year. 60 ensets can feed a family of five for a whole year.

Roofing pandan

Pandan is called a false pineapple, but unlike the false banana, pandan fruits can and should be eaten. Pandan grows on islands in the Pacific Ocean. Short trees have to constantly deal with strong winds, so the pandan has learned to shoot aerial roots from the trunk and use them as supports. Because of these unusual roots, the tree is sometimes called a walking tree.

Pandan is unpretentious and grows in any soil, as long as the sun shines. Pandan fruits are boiled, made into juice, desserts, flatbreads, and eaten raw. They are sweet and fragrant. Pandan roofing leaves are used to make roofs for huts.

Tree spinach

Tree spinach leaves are poisonous when eaten raw. Boiled leaves are a source of vitamins, iron and calcium. Cook them for at least 15-20 minutes. Tree spinach grows in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. It is not afraid of drought or strong winds, and most importantly, spinach is not eaten by pests.

Nopal

The leaves of the nopal cactus can be eaten in any form, the main thing is to clear them of thorns. The fruit of the cactus, which Mexicans call "tuna", tastes like strawberries. Nopal is not only tasty, but also very healthy - I use it to produce medicines.

The nopal cactus is featured on the coat of arms and flag of Mexico.
