Oil spilled? Are you hungry? Are you experiencing iodine deficiency? So what can help us? Without further ado - fucus!

One of the types of fucus in shallow water, small bubbles are visible supporting the thallus in an upright position

Strictly speaking, fucus is not a separate species of algae, but a whole genus of marine plants found in shallow waters, most often in the Baltic and North Seas, as well as off the east coast of North America. At the same time, “sea grapes” (one of the many nicknames for this plant) is rarely found in the depths and seas south of the Mediterranean.

Like all algae, fucus is a lower plant, whose body is represented by a single thallus. The plant's tissues retain water well, preventing it from drying out during low tides. And besides being durable and water-bearing, these fabrics simply sink in water. It is only thanks to air bubbles that the plant body does not lie at the bottom, but reaches towards the surface, receiving maximum sunlight.

How can an ordinary plant from the coastal zone of the seas help get rid of oil spills?

Scientists from the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI) tried to answer this question. In the process of research, they were able to create a kind of filter from brown algae, on which symbiotic microorganisms multiply. Oil does not oppress the collective, in which the main role is played by representatives of the Fucus genus; on the contrary, it provides the necessary substances for growth and reproduction.

Cosmetological extract is a useful thing for the skin!

Like kelp, fucus has great nutritional value - this excellent supplement contains many vitamins and nutrients. Separately, it is worth highlighting fucoidan - a carbohydrate that has the property of suppressing viruses, bacteria and blood clots. And the wonderful salty taste and distinct crunch make this genus of plants a good supporting ingredient - an appetizer or part of a salad.

Cosmetologists have also not ignored this storehouse of substances: the extract is used both in creams and in its pure form and allows you to cleanse the skin and make it smoother.

Fucus vesicularis - a typical representative of the genus, received this name, presumably due to air bubbles in the thallus

Despite its usefulness, seaweed is contraindicated for many groups of people - pregnant women, those suffering from diseases of the endocrine system and those who have hypersensitivity to iodine-containing drugs are better off not consuming this product.
