Not a single victim can escape from him. He is the perfect machine for harvesting scalps. Say hello to the furry bug and the king of cowpats, whose name is Predator. Shaggy.

Nothing unusual, just a bumblebee whose back is jammed.

Yes, that's really his name. Hairy predator, or hairy rove rove. In general, the family of rove beetles, also known as predator beetles, is gigantic. It has more than 60,000 species and 3,000 genera. This is one of the largest families of animals in principle! But this guy managed to stand out even among so many relatives.

Firstly, as we said, there are more than 3000 genera of predator beetles, and the one to which our hero belongs managed to be one of the smallest. There are only 5 species in it. Secondly, among these 5 species, the furry predator is the only one that lives in Europe: the rest of its relatives are more thermophilic.

It is clear why it took root in the north. He's so fluffy!

Thirdly, despite the fact that the genus of the furry predator is tiny, the size of the beetle itself is decent. The hairy rove rove is one of the largest representatives of the family in the northern hemisphere; its carcass grows up to 3 centimeters! But, despite its “impressive” dimensions, you are unlikely to be able to find the beetle. Not only has our hero been registered in the Red Book for a long time, but his habitat is also not the most trivial.

This photo seems cute enough. But only before you find out where he got this bug from.

It doesn't take a genius to notice the furry predator's resemblance to bees and bumblebees. Our hero copies striped workers for a reason: this way he neutralizes possible attacks from larger predators. Birds and other insects are not strong in entomology, so they are in no hurry to approach black and yellow objects. But here’s a life hack for you by definition: if a fluffy bumblebee is sitting on a fragrant flower, then a hairy rove bee is hiding on a fragrant heap of dung.

And it also flies! And in flight, it’s almost impossible to distinguish this thing from a bumblebee.

Why not? It's warm, safe and there's always plenty of food. Not in the way you probably thought. Its prey is not the brown mass, but those who flock to this brown mass: flies, midges and their larvae. In its search for lunch, the predator is helped by its “hairiness” - sensitive hairs throughout the body detect the movements of the prey.

The hair on my head began to move. So it's time to hunt!

Having discovered the prey, the predator begins to hunt. To catch a nimble flying target, you need to be nimble yourself. Thanks to the very short elytra, which cover only the front part of the body, the hairy rove rove has a flexible, thin body. Because of this, their belly bends in any direction, and the beetle itself is able to keep up with any victim and squeeze into any hole.

Now the name “predator” is completely justified.

There, surrounded by the stench and warmth from the decomposition of organic matter, adult predators spend the winter. And with the arrival of the summer heat, the time for dates begins, full of compost romance - the larvae become the fruit of the love and passion of rove bees. They are not so furry, but just as predatory.

King of the hill. Dung.

Hungry for living flesh, they hunt their own kind - larvae of other species and even relatives. This insatiability is easy to explain: if our mothers force us to eat porridge in order to be big and strong, then young predators need to destroy as many living creatures as possible in order to grow healthy and strong - how well or poorly the larva eats will directly determine its adult sizes. The young predator has only a couple of weeks to eat. And then everything: molting, transformation and adult life with a lot of manure for a mortgage.
