How did the USSR see the future of humanity?

It just so happened that the USSR ceased to exist in the 1990s, but its cultural heritage, the dreams of its best representatives about a bright future have not gone away. We have collected in one selection films with the dreams of Soviet screenwriters and directors about a future in which the Soviet Union will become a leading world power. It turned out beautiful and a little sad - such prospects were wasted!

Space Flight (1935)

In Marvel comics, this was called “days of future past” - in the then young Soviet Union in 1935, it was assumed that within ten years rockets would take a person to the Moon, and the brilliant science fiction film “Space Flight” demonstrated this possibility in the smallest detail. Alas, the world war prevented Tsiolkovsky’s plans to take people into space in the coming years, but the craving for the sky did not leave us and the past future nevertheless arrived, if not in the 1940s, but in the 1960s.

Heaven is Calling (1959)

The cult Soviet science fiction thriller “The Sky is Calling” very accurately predicted the competition in the battle for space between the USA and the USSR - the film is dedicated to the conquest of Mars, and at first the two superpowers undertake a difficult flight to the red planet together, but are later separated. Of course, the capitalists turn out to be greedy and short-sighted, which leads the expedition to disaster. The Soviet space program is characterized by thoroughness, dedication and the highest professionalism. Soviet man - he is like that, yes!

Planet of Storms (1961)

Our main science-fiction masterpiece “Planet of Storms”, together with the above-described film “The Sky is Calling”, literally became objects of fierce envy of American cinema - they were purchased for Western distribution, but were mercilessly torn to pieces and turned into “bags” for a picky public. But in the same “Planet” by Klushantsev, it is interesting not only how space explorers conquer Venus, but also the power of the Soviet man, which could only be achieved by building a communist future. And yes, our spaceships are the best in the world!

His Name Was Robert (1967)

Hollywood has been afraid of the rebellion of robots and new technologies almost since its birth. In the USSR, the future did not seem mortally dangerous and unpredictable, and even a cyborg that got out of control turned not into a killer terminator, but into the most humane person. The near bright future shown in the fantastic comedy “His Name was Robert” sets the viewer on a lyrical wave, giving faith in humanity, in its mind and feelings. Well, our vast Motherland in this picture is as beautiful as ever.

Andromeda Nebula (1967)

The works of Ivan Efremov can be treated differently, but one thing cannot be taken away from this science fiction writer - like the main masters of this genre, he managed to create a unique vision of the future, which impresses with the detail and elaboration of the ideological and social platform. Efremov’s books – this also has a direct connection to the film adaptation of “The Andromeda Nebula” of the same name – is a description of a bright communist tomorrow, in which the world no longer wastes time and energy on meaningless wars, everything in it is done for and for the benefit of man.

Moscow – Cassiopeia (1974)

The authors of the duology “Moscow - Cassiopeia” and “Youths in the Universe” took on a difficult task - they had to show the future in two dimensions. Initially, the plot looks very close to tomorrow, when interstellar flights will become available to send the seven pioneers. Then the creators of the film must show time that has noticeably run ahead for the astronauts, according to Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The films cope with both. The Soviet future of these science fiction films is wonderful.

Great Space Journey (1975)

Based on the play by Sergei Mikhalkov, “The Great Space Journey” is practically the twin brother of the film “Moscow - Cassiopeia” with the only amendment that in this case, adults do not dare to send children into space alone, but send an experienced captain with them. And again, most of the film’s plot takes place on board a starship, but at the moment of making the decision to fly and during the preparation stage, we can see a bright Soviet future in which children are trusted to build a new, happy world.

Orion's Loop (1980)

Impressive, but for some reason not very beloved by the public and viewers, the science fiction film “Orion’s Loop” began back in 1980 to prepare Soviet people for an early meeting with their brothers in mind. The future in the film demonstrates the happy cooperation of countries around the world - the UN here is the true main governing body of the Earth, but each individual country has its own path of development. The USSR is betting on space travel, so it is our ship and crew that are tasked with making contact with aliens flying towards the Sun.

The Mystery of the Third Planet (1981)

Under the heading “The Mystery of the Third Planet” we want to place the entire range of paintings about Alisa Selezneva, a girl from Moscow at the end of the 21st century, the heroine of numerous books by Kir Bulychev. The future in “The Secret”, “Guest from the Future” or “The Purple Ball” appears different, but the Soviet socialist society that has reached the peak of its development is always present in it. Of course, in the future, Soviet man conquers space, of course, he studies the past with the help of a time machine, of course, he builds contacts with aliens. You can't imagine a better future.

Through hardships to the stars (1981)

The plot of one of the most beautiful Soviet science fiction films, “Through Hardships to the Stars,” takes viewers all the way back to 2221, an era of happy prosperity of society, a time of space discoveries and the conquest of galactic worlds. An alien who came to Earth admires the achievements of our civilization, she dreams of joining Soviet society, becoming a part of it, however, she also has something to pass on to our descendants - Niya warns humanity about the danger of environmental disasters and the depletion of natural resources.
