9 cases when actors appeared in films not themselves, but with the help of digital technology (10 photos)
This year can already be considered the year of neural networks. They are everywhere now, and their ability to believably replace real photos and videos is only increasing. Just look, actors will not be needed when they can be replaced with their digital versions.
But even before neural networks, actors and actresses were recreated using computer graphics. Most often, this happened to actors who died during the filming of the film before finishing their scenes and who could not simply be replaced by doubles without showing their faces.
Examples of this were already encountered in the 1970s, but in the last ten years the “resurrection” of actors on the screen is no longer happening only because it is impossible to finish a film without it, but also for the sake of entertainment. As you understand, such cases are criticized by the public, because the ethics of such things remain in question.
Let's remember a few scenes or entire films where certain actors were added not as usual, but with the help of computer technology.
Marlon Brando in Superman Returns (2006)
Brando himself did not act; he died two years before the film was released. For this film, archival footage of the actor was used, taken from the materials of the 1978 film “Superman”. There Marlon Brando played Jor-El.
Carrie Fisher in the movie Rogue One. Star Wars Tales (2016)
Recreated using CGI, and the voice was taken from archival footage of other films in the saga. The actress herself died the year the film was released.
Peter Cushing in the film Rogue One. Star Wars Tales"
The actor himself died back in 1994 and was recreated for this film using a computer. He was "played" by fellow actor Guy Henry, whose face was replaced in post-production with a digital version of Peter Cushing's face
Laurence Olivier in the film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Suddenly he became the main villain of the film, although he died 15 years before its release. The villainous hologram performed by Olivier appeared using archival videos of the actor and computer graphics.
Bruce Lee in Game of Death (1978)
The actor died during the filming of the film in 1973, which is why Game of Death had to be completed without him. Lee's character was played by other actors, whose faces were later replaced with his. And since it was the seventies, in some places it looked very noticeable.
Paul Walker in Furious 7 (2015)
The famous final scene to the song “See You Again” was filmed without Walker. The actor died in a car accident in 2013, and the film was completed with the help of his brothers Caleb and Cody Walker. Including this scene. The actor's face was superimposed using graphics.
Oliver Reed in the movie Gladiator (2000)
The actor died during the filming of the film, so to create one of the scenes it was necessary to use already filmed footage of Reed, which was digitally inserted into other scenery.
Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film "Terminator: Let the Savior Come" (2009)
Arnie as the T-800 looks like a video game character. But this animated model of Schwarzenegger appeared in the film. After all, these were technologies of the 2000s.
Sean Young in Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
The actress, who played Rachel in the original 1982 Blade Runner, looked young again in the sequel, which came out 35 years later. All thanks to the fact that in the second part Rachel was no longer played by Sean Young, but by Lauren Pita, whose face was replaced with Young’s. The actress herself taught her understudy how to play her. In addition, Young voiced the heroine's lines.
