Life underwater is like a separate planet that exists on its own: they spit out their internal organs, defend themselves in the strangest ways and survive as best they can.
Thanks to modern methods of underwater photography and tireless researchers who tell us more and more about the inhabitants of the depths of the seas and oceans. And some facts make you a little uneasy.
Sea turtles have spines in their throats
Turtles seem very cute until you decide to look into their mouth. All the way to the stomach, their esophagus is lined with spiny projections that help trap jellyfish, which they mainly feed on. During a meal, the turtle uses its throat muscles to push water out of itself, and the teeth retain the food. These protrusions also protect the turtle’s mucous membrane from jellyfish poison.
Goblin shark and its jaws
This shark is no different in beauty - a long spade-shaped muzzle, a flabby body, an underdeveloped tail. But its main and most terrible feature is the ability to sharply extend its jaw by 7 centimeters. He performs these tricks exclusively during hunting, when he catches invertebrates and small fish.
Howlyod can't shut his mouth
This little one grows to a maximum of 30 cm, but due to its huge jaw, the howlyod looks quite scary. It feeds on small fish and shrimp, swallowing them whole. And such disproportionately huge teeth create something like a lattice through which the unfortunate fish cannot slip back out. And the hauliod is also transparent, so it is usually not noticed until they find themselves in this “cage”.
A shark grows its own tooth in one day
Everyone now remembered their dental bills and suddenly began to envy the lemon shark. She is capable of shedding more than 30 thousand teeth in her lifetime. She loses one canine a week because they are like our baby teeth, which are poorly attached to the gums. And their teeth are in several rows. They usually use the front ones, which wear out more quickly and wear out faster. A new tooth grows within a day.
The sea cucumber spits... with its own organs
Holothuria is a representative of echinoderms and a close relative of sea urchins and stars. They actually look like a cucumber, but they have tiny legs. Sea cucumbers are hunted by everyone - a number of sharks, fish, crabs, turtles, people. To stop this general hunt, they invented a strange method of defense: a sharp contraction of the muscles, and then shooting part of the intestines at the predator. This organ recovers very quickly, so they can throw it as many times as they want.
