The largest island on the planet, with a rather modest population. There are only about 60 thousand people in more than 2 million square kilometers.

This is how it turns out that for every inhabitant of Greenland there are approximately 35 square kilometers

But who was the first settler of this icy island? Europeans first arrived in Greenland at the end of the 10th century: the Vikings led by Erik Thorvaldson the Red. Despite the fact that the island is almost entirely hidden under ice, they called it “Green Land”.

In general, Greenland belongs to Denmark, which is about fifty times smaller than the island. Greenland was once a Danish colony, but since 1979 the island has had complete autonomy in its internal affairs. And since 1953, representatives of the island have received a seat in the Danish parliament. Greenlandic is the official language of the country. And it itself comes from the old Inuit language.

Gotthob

The most populated area and administrative center is Gotthob and it is home to 17,000 inhabitants. The University of Greenland is also located here, the only educational institution on the island. In recent years, tourists have come to Gothob to admire the cold exoticism.

Exhibition at the National Museum of Greenland

Gothoba also houses the National Museum of Greenland. There you can find many unique exhibits and trace the centuries-old history of the island. Kayaks, Eskimo folk costumes, sleds and more.

The iceberg that sank the Titanic

There are places in Greenland where the ice thickness can reach three kilometers. If all the ice on the island melts, the level of the World Ocean will rise by as much as seven meters! It was a piece of Greenland iceberg weighing 420,000 tons that broke off from a glacier in Melville Bay that the Titanic collided with in April 1912. As a result of the disaster, almost one and a half thousand people died, and the iceberg ran aground near Franz Josef Land and gradually melted.

It is in Greenland, by the way, that the Jakobshavn glacier is located, which moves at a speed of 30 meters per day.

The climate of the island is quite harsh and residents have to import food from other countries. There is only an abundance of fish there, and it is the main dish in the homes of Greenlanders, because many products there are very expensive. Local residents can even eat fish raw.

The coldest place is the small town of Upernavik, where even in summer the temperature does not rise above five degrees. Upernavik is one of the coldest residential places on the planet, but its name paradoxically translates from Eskimo as “spring place.”

Although there are four airports on the island, only one of them accepts international flights. There are no railways there at all, and there is only a route between Kangilinnguit and Ivittut. So, even in the 21st century they get around very well on dog sleds.

National Park

Greenland is still a pretty secluded place. The island is almost untouched by civilization and it is here that the largest National Park is located. Its territory is 972,000 square kilometers. It is noteworthy that despite the harsh climate, about fifty species of butterflies live in Greenland, and 17 species of whales live in the seas around the island.
