But there are a couple of creepy secrets in this idyll. The construction of a cozy nest is not happening. Barn owls occupy ready-made dwellings: they master comfortable hollows and nooks in attics. All they use when beautifying their living space is the undigested remains of their prey, those same filth.

The chicks stay in a brutal environment for about a month. There can be up to nine eggs in a clutch. But the babies hatch with a spread of one to two weeks. Why? Later chicks are needed as insurance against hungry times. As long as there is enough food, they receive food on equal terms with their big brothers and sisters. And if hunger strikes, the pragmatic mother feeds the weak chicks to the strong ones.

The chicks that survive such a school of life fledge after nine weeks. They immediately begin to learn from their mother the art of killing and the ideology of barn owl superiority, so that six months later they can conquer and oppress other owls on their own...
