Books and films give us different impressions and emotions. Often films based on books cause mixed opinions among viewers. 1. "The Great Gatsby", 2013
The Great Gatsby is a drama based on the 1925 novel of the same name by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The film tells the story of the life of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), a millionaire in love with the beautiful Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). The film takes place in the summer of 1922, and unfolds through the memories of New York writer Nick Carraway, Gatsby's neighbor.
2. "Divergent", 2014
The dystopian film Divergent is based on the 2011 novel by Veronica Roth. It describes a dystopian society in which people are divided into five factions based on personality traits. Young Beatrice turns out to be a divergent - a person who cannot be clearly identified as one of the factions, and enters into a fight against the established system. The first part of the film became a success and collected $290 million at the worldwide box office.
3. “The Fault in Our Stars”, 2014
“The Fault in Our Stars” is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by writer John Green. The romantic drama follows the love story of 16-year-old Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and 17-year-old Augustus (Ansel Elgort). The girl has cancer, and the guy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. They met in a support group for cancer patients and immediately became close. This film adaptation is called “honest” because it harmoniously managed to convey the depth of feelings described in the book.
4. "Little Women", 2019
Greta Gerwig's 2019 film is the seventh film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's 1868 novel Little Women. The film takes place in the 19th century after the American Civil War and tells the story of four sisters. The film received six Oscar nominations and won the award for Best Costume Design. It also grossed approximately $218 million against a budget of $40 million.
5. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire", 2013
The second installment in the Hunger Games film series, released in 2013, is based on the 2009 novel Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. This is a sequel to the first "Hunger Games" and tells the story of the main characters Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson.
6. "Gone Girl", 2014
Gone Girl is a psychological thriller based on the 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn. At the same time, the writer herself converted her book into a film script. The puzzle film tells the story of a couple - Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy (Rosamund Pike). On Amy's fifth wedding anniversary, she suddenly disappears, and Nick becomes the prime suspect in the case.
7. "It", 2017
This horror film, released in 2017, is the first in the “It” film series. The film is based on the 1986 novel from the master of horror, Stephen King. The film adaptation of the book was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time, with a budget of $35 million and grossing over $700 million.
8. "The Handmaid's Tale", TV series, 2017
The Handmaid's Tale is an American series from Hulu, based on the 1985 novel by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood. The film tells about the events of the near future, in which many women can no longer have children. The first season of the series received eight Emmy awards in 13 categories, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series.
9. "Dune", 2021
Dune is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel of the same name. The film turned out to be a box office hit, grossing $402 million at the box office against a budget of $165 million. The film also received numerous nominations and won a Golden Globe for Best Music.
10. "Crazy Rich Asians", 2019
The romantic drama Crazy Rich Asians is based on K. Kwan's 2013 novel of the same name. The film has an almost entirely Asian cast - and it became the first Hollywood film (not about martial arts) with leading actors of Asian descent. With a budget of $30 million, the film grossed $240 million worldwide.
