Some interesting facts and interesting shots from the filming of the film “Home Alone,” beloved by many children and adults.
1. The idea for the film “Home Alone” was born to John Hughes (producer, screenwriter and director) during the filming of the film “Uncle Buck” starring Macaulay Culkin and John Candy. Moreover, he immediately decided that Macaulay Culkin should play the main role.
But despite the fact that the script was written specifically for Culkin, an audition was organized for the role of Kevin. Director Chris Columbus organized a casting and looked through 400 applicants for this role. However, none of the boys could do a better job than Culkin himself.
John Candy, by the way, also played a small role in the film “Home Alone” as musician Gus Polinsky, who drove Kevin’s mother home.
2. Joe Pesci wanted to make Macaulay Culkin really afraid of him, so that the boy would play his role more realistically. During filming, he tried to intersect with the boy less often, and he tried to look more menacing. And during the filming of the scene with the boy hanging on a hook. Peshi got carried away and accidentally bit Macaulay’s finger until it bled, when his hero, according to the plot, was supposed to threaten the boy with biting off his fingers.
3. The film “Angels with Dirty Souls” does not actually exist. This fragment was filmed specifically for the film Home Alone. The same applies to the second part of the film.
4. Mitch Murphy's little neighbor, whom Kevin's sister considered instead of her brother, was played by the young actor Jeffrey Weisman. The boy auditioned for the role of Kevin, but in the end he only got a small episode.
A few years later, Jeffrey would audition for the role of Richie in the film Richie Richie, but even there the role would go to Macaulay Culkin.
5. Joe Pesci was not used to acting in family films, so he kept swearing on set, which made the filming process somewhat more complicated. Then Chris Columbus suggested that he replace the swear words with the word “refrigerator.”
By the way, in some scenes you can see that Harry wears a ring on his ring finger. Joe Pesci sometimes forgot to take it off during filming.
6. The tarantula on Daniel Stern's (Marv) face was the real thing. Daniel was terribly afraid of him, but agreed to shoot one take.
But the most interesting thing is that in this scene Stern does not scream at all, but simply opens his mouth, otherwise he could scare the tarantula and it would bite him. The sound of the scream was added separately.
7. Macaulay Culkin's father (Keith Culkin) wanted to make as much money as possible, so he began to tell tales about how Macaulay Culkin was too attached to his brother Kieran, and they always did everything together.
As a result, Kieran Culkin was also cast in the film. He played the same cousin Fuller who wets the bed when he drinks too much in the evenings.
8. Originally, John Hughes did not have old man Marley in his script. Director Chris Columbus suggested adding this character in order to add more sentimentality, and so that someone would appear in the film who would tell Kevin about the importance of family.
9. In the scenes where Marv walks barefoot in the snow, he was actually wearing special flesh-colored rubber socks. And the Christmas tree decorations that he steps on with his bare feet when he climbs through the window are actually made of sugar.
10. Surely, you all remember the moment when Kevin found a photo of Buzz’s girlfriend. In fact, in the photo there is a boy in a wig, namely the son of the production designer. The fact is that the director did not want to take a photo of a real girl, because he did not want them to laugh at her later.
11. The film “Home Alone” was also successful financially. With a budget of only $18 million, the film grossed $476.5 million worldwide. Therefore, it is not surprising that the second part was soon put into production.
12. Some scenes were filmed in a very ordinary school. For example, the airplane scene (business class) was filmed on the school basketball court, and the neighbors' flooded basement through which Kevin runs is actually the school swimming pool.
13. The figure of a jockey that is constantly hit by approaching cars is a reference to another Chris Columbus film, Adventures in Babysitting (1987). In this film, the long-suffering figure of a jockey is also hit by a truck.
14. According to the film, the McCallisters should have a dog. Firstly, there is a separate hole in the door for the dog (that’s what Marv tried to get through), and secondly, at the beginning of the film, Kevin’s mother tells the interlocutor on the phone that they left the dog in the kennel.
15. To avoid any risks and to avoid hitting the boy with a van, the scene when Harry and Marv almost hit Kevin was filmed backwards. This is even indicated by improperly flowing smoke.
16. When Kevin first meets old man Marley, there is a visible wound on the latter’s hand, but over time the wound becomes smaller and smaller, and in the end it disappears altogether. So the director wanted to show that the old man had gone his way, and his mental wounds had finally healed.
17. After the success of the film, the McCallister house became a tourist spot where excursions are constantly held.
18. Thanks to the success of the film, not only sequels were released, but also separate games for computers and home consoles.
19. The tree house was built specifically for the film. After filming, this house was dismantled.
