As children, don’t feed us bread, just let us learn something new: how something works, why the sky is blue, can dinosaurs come back, and so on. And only with age comes the understanding that it is not for nothing that we have always been told: “The less you know, the better you sleep,” because some knowledge really gives us goosebumps - especially those that concern ourselves. Reddit users decided to remember just such facts, and this is what happened.

1. “Call of the Void.” This is when people are at great heights, such as on roofs or cliffs, and suddenly feel the urge to jump. And this is a pretty common thing."

2. “We are smart enough to create an ideal society, but too greedy to make it work.”

3. “People have an instinct that allows them to sense when someone is looking at them. So if you think you're being watched, you're probably right."

4. “The fact that every man is capable of extreme evil under the right circumstances.”

5. “In most hypothermia deaths, people undress completely before dying.”

This happens because blood stops flowing to the extremities to prevent the body from losing heat. Shortly before death, the brain seems to “shut down” and allows blood flow to return to normal. As a result, warm blood fills the frozen limbs, making the person unbearably hot, and so he undresses.

6. “Only 30 people are enough to provoke the herd instinct and control a whole crowd of more than 10,000 people who will blindly imitate them.”

7. “Compared to other species, ours has an abnormally risky birth. Due to the mother's narrow pelvis (since we are erect) and large heads, fetuses cannot be carried to full term. Humans are born prematurely while the head is still tiny and soft. Otherwise, it would be impossible to survive childbirth at all.”

8. “There is a condition with a brain injury when you are not able to recognize the objects around you. For example, you see a fork, its colors and shape, but you don’t understand how to use it, whether it’s edible or not, etc.”

9. “One of my favorite aspects of human nature is the fact that there is something we are best at. Yes, we are not the fastest, strongest and most agile. But out of all the animal kingdom we can run the longest."

Humans are adapted to do something that very few animals can do, which is run for long periods of time. And here's where it gets creepy: imagine yourself as a gazelle on the plains of Africa at the beginning of human history. You see hairless monkeys running towards you, but damn, they are kind of slow. Your instincts kick in and you simply run away. Once they are out of sight, you relax and go back to eating grass or whatever you normally do. But, holy crap, here they are again, slowly running towards you. How did they figure out where you ran away? You don't know, you're a gazelle.

So you run away again and again you think you are safe. Then the hairless monkeys appear again and slowly approach you again. You keep repeating this until you can't run anymore. You are not designed for continuous long distance running, but they are. In the end, you fall exhausted and become their prey.

I find this creepy. A slow predator that somehow always finds you and chases you until you can't run anymore.

10. ““Learned memories,” meaning people are 100% sure they remember something that never actually happened, but has been mentioned many times in the media/memes/etc.”

11. “During surgery, surgeons may move your organs to get to the desired area, but they do not put them back in place. A strange feeling in the stomach after surgery - it’s your organs moving back on their own.”

12. “We have no way to conclusively prove that ANYTHING happening right now is real. All this may simply be an illusion created by the mind. In the grand scheme of the universe, every event that led to this particular moment is incredibly unlikely, and in comparison it is much more likely that the life we all see is the fruit of a brief existence of consciousness in an endless nothingness.”

13. “We have regeneration genes, like starfish and salamanders. They are on the same chromosome as the genes for scar tissue formation, but, unlike them, they are not included."

14. “Because the eyes are not only incredibly vulnerable to infections due to moisture, they are also directly connected to our brain. This requires an additional immune system."

A separate immune system has several advantages. First, pathogens cannot travel from the eyes to the body or from the body to the eyes. Who would like a stomach infection that could blind you! A normal immune reaction would cause swelling that would destroy the eye. The eyes have several different levels of protection precisely because they are so important.

15. “Stomach acid can dissolve a razor blade, you know that? Well, here it is: your stomach is constantly trying its best to prevent the acid from corroding it. Have a good day :)"

16. “On a recent meeting with a criminologist, I learned that many people die naked on or near the toilet. It turns out that when people die, they become very hot, and they try to undress.”

17. “How one person can control millions of people. 100 million people can fear one person, and he will remain in power for many years until his death. Once he dies, this collective fear turns into worship of this bad man."

18. “Looking at pictures of sick people will automatically make your immune system a little more active.”

19. “Aphantasia: Almost 4% of people have no visual imagination and cannot take advantage of the “movie in the head” effect. Their imagination works either with language, abstractions and raw emotions, or with imaginary sounds and tactile sensations.”

Imagine how creepy and alien their thoughts would seem to an ordinary person. Their minds work more like super-advanced ChatGPT than other homo sapiens.

20. “There is no particular type of person who can become a victim of a cult. Anyone is susceptible to this. People of any socio-economic status, any education, any race, gender, religion can join the cult.”

21. “The Uncanny Valley phenomenon implies that at some point in human history we had to fear something that *looked* human but wasn’t.”

22. “You are not as sensitive to touch as you would like to think. For example, if you are poked in the back with two fingers at a distance of several centimeters from each other, it will seem to you that it was only one finger."

23. “If you get bored enough, you will start intentionally hurting yourself.”

24. “If your immune system realized you had eyes, it would attack them and try to eliminate them from your body, like a virus.”

25. “Eventually all graves are abandoned.”
