How cats mark territory “backwards” (5 photos)

Many people have at least once seen how cats mark their territory. However, why do they do it backwards?

No one will notice the sabotage.

First, let's figure it out: how do animals mark territory in general? Most mammals mark boundaries in two ways. The first is the secretions of all kinds of glands, of which there are a huge number: on the face, on the paws, on the tail, under the tail and inside the body itself.

By the way, by stripping tree trunks (or sofa legs), cats also mark their territory. Between their fingers there are special glands that leave a smell.

The second way is urine. With it, a lot of unnecessary and necessary things are removed from the body, such as substances indicating gender, hormonal levels, health and some other aspects of the “scribe”. Depending on why the animal needs to mark its territory, it uses the first, second, or both options at once. And cats are no exception.

Now it's his car.

Having chosen the most visible corner, the woolly one turns its back, lifts its tail and releases a stream. This signals to all the cats in the area that mating is possible and alerts the cats that the area is occupied. So, we figured out why. All that remains is to understand “from where”? How do woolies manage to urinate “backwards and forwards” and even so precisely (and smellily)?

Large cats have a similar mechanism. They also gush with their marks.

Let's turn to anatomy. The cat's genital area is surrounded by a wide variety of muscles. And if in the “normal” state the urogenital opening is directed slightly downward, then when the cat decides to mark something, the muscles will quickly pull the “barrel” to the desired height. And voila - everything behind the woolen one is under fire! The accuracy and range of the jet is explained by the anatomy of the urinary tract. For cats, this is a fairly thin tube with a small hole at the end. Everyone used a spray bottle, right? There's something similar there.

As you can see, all the necessary organs are already located at the back. The cat can only pull them up with his muscles to the required height in order to spray where he is aiming.

And the smell can be explained quite simply. Firstly, urine itself does not smell like flowers. Secondly, it contains various aromatic compounds by default, a kind of individual signature of the beast. And thirdly, wool animals have special odorous glands that open into the urinary ducts. Together, this creates a long-lasting aroma and a way to exchange information.
