Many actors have undergone body transformation for the sake of the role - Christian Bale alone is worth it. But what’s more difficult: changing your usual form or experiencing psychological stress, which often ends in a nervous breakdown.

Michelle Williams: "7 Days and Nights with Marilyn" (2011)

For her role as Marilyn Monroe in the biopic 7 Days and Nights with Marilyn, Michelle Williams wore a belt tied around her knees.

The thing is that the iconic Hollywood diva was known, among other things, for her characteristic gait. Michelle decided that a belt would help her better imitate Monroe's signature hip swing.

Jared Leto: Morbius (2022)

On the set of Morbius, Jared Leto pretended that he, like his character, walked with great difficulty. The actor continued to limp on crutches even during breaks between takes.

The crutches made Jared's trips to the bathroom extremely long. Therefore, the actor agreed to use a wheelchair to move back and forth faster.

Margot Robbie: "Tonya vs. Everyone" (2017)

To play real-life American figure skater Tonya Harding, Margot Robbie gave it her all. She trained to skate five hours a day, five days a week, and this all lasted for five months. The actress worked so hard that she suffered a herniated disc in her neck.

But she didn’t dare to lighten her hair for the role of Margot. To avoid damaging them, she wore wigs.

Robert De Niro: Cape Fear (1991)

In the thriller “Cape Fear,” Robert De Niro played a seasoned criminal who was released from prison after 14 years in prison. The actor wrote a check for $5,000 to the dentist to sharpen and deform his teeth for the role.

After completing the film, De Niro paid a dentist $20,000 to completely restore his teeth.

Colin Firth: "The King's Speech" (2010)

In the biographical drama "The King's Speech!" Colin Firth played the British monarch George VI, who suffered from speech impediments. And the actor tried to speak completely identical to his character.

After filming, the actor developed headaches, a pinched nerve in his hand, and developed a real stutter. Colin recalls: “I had to learn to stutter and then play someone who is desperately trying not to. It injured my left arm, which was very strange. I must have locked something and pinched a nerve. It was a semi-paralysis that lasted three or four days.”

Jamie Dornan: "The Fall" (2013–2016)

In the TV series The Fall, Jamie Dornan portrayed an elusive serial killer who preys on women.

To get used to the role, one day the actor began to follow a girl who got off the train. He followed her through a couple of intersections, keeping his distance. "It was pretty exciting, but kind of disgusting," Dornan told the Los Angeles Times.

Val Kilmer: "The Doors" (1991)

Val Kilmer really wanted to play the leader of the legendary group The Doors, Jim Morrison. He decided to convince director Oliver Stone that he was suitable for the role. To do this, the actor spent several thousand dollars and shot an eight-minute audition video. In the video, Val sang and looked like Morrison at different stages of his life.

Kilmer got the role and he immersed himself in it very deeply. To simply get out of the image, he needed psychiatric help.

Joaquin Phoenix: "Walk the Line" (2005)

In the musical biopic Walk the Line, Joaquin Phoenix transformed into country legend Johnny Cash. For the role, the actor completely abandoned his own sense of self. Throughout filming, he did not speak to his loved ones and lived only as Cash.

Joaquin explained in an interview: “I give up my life when I work. I don't wear clothes or listen to music that defines who I am. I don't communicate with friends or family. It sounds dramatic, but it's a really difficult process to achieve."

Forest Whitaker: The Last King of Scotland (2006)

In the biographical drama The Last King of Scotland, Forest Whitaker played the role of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The actor remained in character even outside the set. It was so difficult for those around him that Forest’s family stopped talking to him.

Whitaker also learned to speak Swahili and subsisted mostly on mashed bananas and beans.

Adrien Brody: "The Pianist" (2002)

Adrien Brody gave up his apartment, sold his car, turned off his phones and lost 30 pounds on a crash diet. All this in order to play the Polish musician Wladyslaw Szpilman in the biopic “The Pianist”.

As the actor told BBC News, he "missed everyone and everything good," but it helped him immerse himself in the character. After filming, it took Adrian more than six months to come to his senses.
