Carving the perfect statue is undoubtedly a difficult task even for the most talented and professional sculptors. Alas, we see more and more inept crafts of dubious quality. Celebrities, famous athletes and even royalty become their victims!

Recently, photographs of the statue of the famous English athlete, captain of the England football team Harry Kane, were presented to the public for the first time. The statue was commissioned by Waltham Forest Council five years ago, but has only just been unveiled. And it seems clear why: the reaction to the £7,200 statue has been very negative. Fans called her "the stuff of nightmares." Someone asked: “Does any professional football player have a decent statue? Why do they all look so terrible?

And indeed, why.

A five-year-old statue of England captain Harry Kane has been photographed for the first time.

Harry Kane is shocked

But it’s not just football players who suffer. Here is a list of ten "sculpted portraits" of famous people. Can you recognize someone?

1. Bust of a world famous football player

2. Statue based on a photograph of a famous woman

3. Who is this? If you don't know, it's okay

4. A cult figure in the history of comedy cinema

5. You won't believe who this terracotta head is meant to represent

6. This is a famous supermodel - you've never seen her like this before

7. This is a statue of a very famous actor, here he is depicted in his 90s look

8. Tennis racket is a big clue

9. This statue caused a lot of controversy and was moved from its place

10. Did anyone remember this iconic scene from the famous film?

Well. And now - the correct answers!

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo next to his bust outside Madeira International Airport in 2017

This creepy bronze bust is probably the most famous statue in the world, making you either laugh or cry. The statue was unveiled in March 2017, less than a year after Ronaldo won Euro 2016 with Portugal. She is standing in front of the airport in Madeira, home of the famous footballer, in what should have been a sweet gesture. Ronaldo was definitely shocked when he saw her.

2. Melania Trump

This wooden statue, created by conceptual artist Aleš Maxi Zupevec, is the first ever statue of Melania Trump.

In 2019, conceptual artist Aleš Maxi Zupevc created what he claims is the first-ever monument to Melania Trump—and, incredibly, not the last. A wooden statue erected near the former US first lady's hometown in Slovenia has been called a "disgrace" by some, saying it resembles a "Smurfette". The statue, carved from a tree trunk, did not stand for long: in the same year it was burned by unknown attackers. However, a few months later it found new life and was replaced by a bronze version.

3. Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah was created by Egyptian sculptor Mai Abdel Allah.

Mohamed Salah Hamed Mehrez Ghali is an Egyptian footballer who plays as a forward for the English club Liverpool and the Egyptian national team. Considered one of the best players in the world. The author of the statue is the Egyptian sculptor Mai Abdel Allah. It was exhibited at the World Youth Forum in Sharm el-Sheikh. She looks very strange and, to put it mildly, disproportionate.

4. Lucille Ball

The statue was unveiled in 2009 in the actress's hometown of Celorone, New York.

Lucille Ball is a famous American actress and comedian, winner of the Golden Globe and Emmy awards. Lucille died in 1989 at the age of 77. Locals nicknamed the statue "Scary Lucy" and have been calling on the city to get rid of it for years. Even the author was forced to admit that the work turned out to be a little “disturbing.” In general, the statue did not stand the test of time and was replaced in 2016.

5. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

Well, just an amazing resemblance...

This giant 4-meter terracotta head is actually supposed to resemble the late Queen Elizabeth II - in fact, there is also a head of her husband Prince Philip nearby. The owner of the sculptures, Ben Bennett, found them while cleaning out his house and installed them on his lawn in Windsor. After owning them for 12 years after the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, he put them up for sale for £2,000. So if you want to buy these sculptures for your garden, you better hurry up.

6. Kate Moss

Kate Moss appears like you've never seen her before. In 2008, the statue cost more than £1.5 million to make, £1 million of which was the price of 18-carat gold.

For some reason, the supermodel was twisted like a pretzel, and the artwork was called "Siren."

But Kate herself, according to the author of this masterpiece, Mark Quinn, was a fan: “When I showed Kate the figurine, she said that she really liked it. She really liked the idea and modeled for me for about a day. She didn't pose for me like that. Kate believes this elevates her to a mythical level. I think she really liked it because she understands the difference between her image and herself. Sculpture is really about whether we create the images or whether the images create us. It’s about trying to make impossible dreams come true and about immortality.”

7. Johnny Depp

The actor presented this statue at the Serbian Film Festival in 2010

Johnny Depp presented this statue of himself at the Serbian Film Festival in 2010. But he was clearly amused by this “resemblance” to himself—or rather, to the character in the 1993 film “Arizona Dream.”

When Depp stood next to the statue, the lack of resemblance was immediately noticeable.

8. Andy Murray

If Andy Murray was embarrassed, he tried not to show it

Sir Andrew Barron Murray is a British professional tennis player and former world No. 1 singles player; the only two-time Olympic champion in men's singles in history. The organizers of the 2011 Shanghai Rolex Masters immortalized him in terracotta especially for the occasion. It didn't turn out perfect. But at least I managed to capture the facial expression. An interesting solution: here he looks like a warrior in armor.

9. Greta Thunberg

The statue of Greta Thunberg installed at the University of Winchester was created at a huge cost of £24,000. The statue of the Swedish activist, called "Make A Difference", was unveiled in front of the university's main entrance in March 2021, but was moved to a more discreet location in January this year.

After its installation, the sculpture, commissioned by the institution, provoked a strong reaction from students and local residents, who accused the university of “wasting money on meaningless statues.” Residents of the Hampshire town also expressed confusion about the sculpture, since Greta Thunberg never lived here.

10. Colin Firth

This is a recreation of a scene from the movie Pride and Prejudice (1995)

The scene from the 1995 cult film Pride and Prejudice, in which Colin Firth as Mr Darcy emerges from a lake in a wet shirt, has been hailed as the most memorable moment in British television drama.

But some fans thought it had gone too far when a 4m version of Mr Darcy was installed in the Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park in 2013. The massive statue looked quite intimidating. It took a team of three sculptors more than two months to design, create and paint the model, which is the height of a double-decker bus.
