10 inventions without which the world would be different (11 photos)
Some inventions seem so simple and natural, as if they have always been there. However, it is not. And who knows what the world would be like if these objects and substances had not been invented.
Central axis
The first wheel was invented in 3500 BC. e. Yet the invention of the central axis seems more important. After all, it was the “axle and wheel” combination that changed the world, and not each invention separately.
Bessemer furnace
The Bessemer process made mass production of steel possible. This was a huge innovation in construction that led to many important advances, notably the construction of high-rise buildings using metal frames.
This process was invented simultaneously by Sir Henry Bessemer (from England) and William Kelly (from the USA) in the 1840s. And in 1850, the first 10-story house in the history of mankind on a metal frame was built in Chicago.
Celluloid
Celluloid is the first synthetic plastic in history. Celluloid was developed in the 1860s by industrialist and inventor John Wesley Hyatt. Thanks to this invention, plastic bags, plates, watch cases and so on appeared. Yes, film, which is still used to make films, is also celluloid. Without this invention we would not have cinema.
Edison's cylindrical phonograph
Before the phonograph, the only way to listen to music was... to go somewhere where they were playing. But the phonograph brought music to the masses. Of course, the 1857 invention is a far cry from the iPod, but it marked the beginning of portable music. Without this invention, we wouldn't have music in our pockets.
Wright brothers plane
The first heavier-than-air flying vehicle in history. In 1903, the Wright brothers made their first flight. And this changed the entire human civilization. Without this invention we would not have airplanes.
Kinescope Zvorykina
In 1923, the American Vladimir Zvorykin invented a device for transmitting and receiving video signals - an iconoscope and a kinescope. And in 1929, the first regular television broadcasts began in the United States. Without this invention we would not have television.
Daguerreotype
In 1837, Louis-Jacques Daguerre and Nicéphore Niepce independently invented photography. True, Niepce’s method required an exposure of at least 8 hours, while Daguerre’s method required 30 minutes. Therefore, Daguerre's technology won, and so daguerreotypes appeared. And without this invention there would be no modern photography.
Saxophone
The first saxophone was patented by Antoine-Joseph Sax in Paris in 1846. It was the first instrument to combine a reed (as in a clarinet) with a brass bell (as in a trumpet). Without the invention of the saxophone, we did not have jazz in its modern sound.
Integrated circuit
Modern electronics would simply not be possible without the integrated circuit, which was invented in 1958 by Jack Kilby. There is no point in describing the operation process of an integrated circuit; it’s easier to say that microchips are now everywhere - from spaceships to children’s toys
Personal Computer
It is difficult to imagine the path from a stone cleaver to a personal computer. Considering that the first stone tools appeared 2 million years ago, the path is quite long.
But the path to digital civilization took only 55 years. The first personal computer appeared in 1977. And now we can’t live even a minute without him….
