All male cats with an M mark on their forehead have the stripe gene. What’s interesting is that some cats of the entire tabby color have only this letter on their forehead, and may not have stripes on the rest of their body. But the striping gene is 100% present in such cats, and the letter M serves as its marker. 
Yes, cats have been domesticated for a long time, but they have not yet become completely domestic. In fact, we keep a wild animal at home, a piece of living nature. And the letter M on the foreheads of many of them reminds us of this.
