Funny costumes from science fiction films of the last century that amaze with their absurdity (15 photos)

Costumes, makeup and hairstyles are very important parts of movie characters. The plot may be full of brilliant lines, the actors may act brilliantly, but in many ways, what makes the characters memorable are well-chosen visual images.

A particularly interesting challenge is faced by costume designers in science fiction films, where they can literally come up with fashion that will exist in the fictional universe of the film. However, not all film projects have the budget of some kind of “Dune” and real geniuses of the profession do not always work with them. Therefore, costumes from many films of the genre, especially those filmed quite a long time ago (we deliberately took films from the last century), look so funny from the perspective of today that one cannot help but pay attention to it.

This is not to say that the films presented in this selection are bad (a couple are definitely not), but when it comes to costumes, they are in full swing. Somewhere the laziness of the costume designers, somewhere too great a desire to make something unique, somewhere a specific taste gave us THIS.

It's especially fun to see how costume designers in the 80s and 90s tried to bring superheroes and supervillains from comic books to the big screen. Oh, this will be fun!

Zardoz (1974)

Sean Connery really wanted to stop playing James Bond... to do something like this?! In this image, one detail is more striking than the other: boots, mustache, braid, belts, panties and a revolver - which do you like best? By the way, this is exactly what the filmmakers say we will look like in 2293.

Captain America (1990)

Overall, the outlandishness of the costume isn't that noticeable—more of the weirdness is based on the fact that we're used to seeing a different Captain America. But did you notice his adorable ears painted on top of his suit? They are especially visible in the second frame, as small folds have formed on them. Brilliant solution!

Killers from Space (1954)

It was 1954, the budgets of science fiction horror films were small, and I really wanted to scare people with mysterious alien characters!

Don't Call Me Baby (1996)

There is absolutely no reason to believe that such a costume for Pamela Anderson's character Barbara would be in any way suitable in the shootouts and other action scenes of this action film. This is probably just the last suit that should have been chosen by a man whose profession is to catch debtors and criminals.

By the way, this is a dystopian film from 1996, the events of which take place in 2017. Another fashionable prediction from the cinema.

Death's Bite (1965)

An American horror film with a monster design that looks like something out of a school play. Some greenish rags, a bag over your head and voila!

Phantom (1996)

This is exactly what the average non-Marvel or DC superhero looks like. By the way, Billy Zane from Titanic is hiding under the mask, did you find out? Of course not! After all, the Phantom is elusive.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

There is not yet a single film version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the world in which the appearance of the turtles themselves would not be criticized. But Shredder looked powerful in some places! But definitely not in the 1990 film.

The Incredible Hulk: Return (1988)

Thor and Hulk looked truly menacing in 1988! Stan Lee approves.

Yes, yes, guys, this is exactly how I imagined everything. One-on-one as in the pictures.

Possible quote from Stan Lee holding back his laughter.

Alligator People (1959)

A game of Crocodile in the style of the late 50s.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)

The legendary BDSM costume of Lord Humungus, for whom, although it is very uncomfortable, you don’t have to worry about the safety of your head.

Robot Monster (1953)

The creators of this American science fiction horror film unwittingly created a crossover between King Kong and Teletubbies. What color would this character be?

Battlefield: Earth (2000)

We promised you examples from films of the last century and kept our word, because the year 2000, in case you didn’t know, also belongs to the 20th century. But this fact is not as shocking as the appearance of John Travolta and his colleagues in the science-fiction film “Battlefield: Earth,” which received nine Golden Raspberries.

The Fifth Element (1997)

Ruby Rod, brilliantly performed by Chris Tucker, would nevertheless not be half as impressive and memorable without her super ridiculous leopard print costume, leopard print microphone and forelock that still makes you smile to this day.
